Senate Bill 275 was a single-section bill that amended Civil Code section 1624 only. (See Exhibit #1b) Senator Danielson introduced the bill on February 7, 1967 at the request of the State Bar of California. (See Exhibits #1a and #3, page 1)
Senate Bill 275 was assigned to both the Senate and Assembly Committees on Judiciary where policy issues raised by the bill were considered. (See Exhibits #2 and #3) No amendments were made to Senate Bill 275 during legislative consideration. (See Exhibit #2) Subsequent to legislative approval, Governor Ronald Reagan signed Senate Bill 275 on April 25, 1967 and it was recorded by the Secretary of State on that day as Chapter 52 of the Statutes of 1967. The Summary Digest of Statutes Enacted prepared by Legislative Counsel provides the following summary of Senate Bill 275:
… Amends Sec. 1624, Civ.C., re statute of frauds.
Makes any agreement authorizing or employing an agent, broker, or any other person, rather than only an agent or broker, to purchase or sell real estate, or to lease real estate for a longer period than one year, or to procure, introduced, or find a purchaser or seller of real estate or a lessee or lessor of real estate where such lease is for a longer period than one year, for compensation or commission invalid, unless the agreement, or some note or memorandum thereof, is in writing and subscribed by the party to be charged or by his agent.
