States' Budgets Strain Under Unemployment Stats, etc.

April 5, 2010

Some bill research does not include the Governor's file because at the time we researched the bill, the sitting Governor had not released his chaptered bill file. If the Governor's file is not included with this particular research, please contact our office (1-530-666-1917 or quote@legintent.com) and we will be happy to provide this file at no charge if it is available. Please Note: Governor files did not exist prior to 1943.

Balancing state budgets will require states to address unemployment compensation funds, health care for the uninsured, shrinking state revenues, and worsening state fiscal conditions.  The solution might be budget bills in 2010, such as those being considered in California, Massachusetts and Michigan, that result in tax increases and reduced benefits to close outsized budget gaps.

Looking only at unemployment compensation, on March 26, 2010 the U.S. Department of Labor issued an “Economic News Release” that indicated February’s unemployment rates were little changed or slightly higher.

According to this Economic News Release:

"In total, 24 states posted jobless rates significantly lower than the U.S. figure of 9.7 percent, 13 statesand the District of Columbia had measurably higher rates, and 13 states had rates that were not appreciably different from that of the nation."

The Metropolitan Area Employment and Unemployment news release for February is scheduled to be released on Wednesday, April 7, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. (EDT). The Regional and State Employment and Unemployment news release for March is scheduled to be released on Friday, April16, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. (EDT).
